Mailbox makeoverOne of the UK’s leading luxury shopping malls is undergoing an epic redevelopment and is relying on bold wayfinding to maintain footfall to its major retailer. Based in Birmingham, The Mailbox has appointed signage specialists Hollywood Monster to help produce and install its on-going changing navigation system.

The Mailbox remains open to the public during the redevelopment, which is set for completion in autumn 2015, and Harvey Nichols – its main retailer – will continue to open its doors during the project. With the daily challenges of such an epic construction underway, The Mailbox has appointed Hollywood Monster to produce and install both internal and external signage working alongside wayfinding experts Holmes Wood.

The main entrance to The Mailbox has now been closed to the public, cutting off access to Harvey Nichols, however,  Holmes Wood designed a new entrance for the store and Hollywood Monster have been working alongside the operations team to deliver a quick turnaround installation to limit disruption to shoppers. Alongside this, Hollywood Monster has also managed the logistics of installing a new walkway and internal signage to give Harvey Nichols a bold new entrance.

“With such a major build programme, it’s important for us to maintain a good level of customer experience, and Hollywood Monster is helping us to do just that. With the creative approach signed off, we needed a team that would liaise with multiple parties to help make it happen, whilst taking into account the 24-hour nature of our site. They have been instrumental in our transition, and have demonstrated the ability to react at the last minute and install a navigation system that can re-route customers as well as promote our key marketing messages. Added to that, their style and quality is on brand with The Mailbox and Harvey Nichols, which is essential in maintaining our high end position within the retail market,” said Tarah Hewitt, Marketing Manager at The Mailbox.

Hollywood Monster’s approach to The Mailbox project has focused on temporary solutions that can be turned around in a short timespan, to ensure that Harvey Nichols and the rest of the retailers can continue trading during the construction. Acting on the ground, the team has helped install everything from small solutions such as re-numbering elevator floors and directing people in new directions, to full-scale changes such as a new internal walkway and bold new front entrance.

“We absolutely love the complications of this project. Holmes Wood came up with great ideas and we’re now liaising with The Mailbox’s on-site team to source the right materials, install them quickly and provide a high end finish. The site’s mixture of internal and external spaces has allowed both big and small solutions, including giant lamps to ‘light the way’ for shoppers and huge open doors to guide them through the new routes into the mall. As well as the physical infrastructure we wanted to make sure that these spaces weren’t lost opportunities so each and every area is being used to promote marketing messages too,” said Hollywood Monster Managing Director, Tim Andrews.

The redevelopment of The Mailbox will continue into 2015, with further changes to the building and customer routes expected.
