Gareth’s in top gear for FA Cup glory

26.04.11

Stoke City super fan Gareth Hughes has decided that if you only go to Wembley once you better do it in style.

Gareth is getting his car professionally wrapped in Stoke City’s colours to celebrate the club’s appearance at the home of football for the FA Cup semi-final against Bolton Wanderers on Sunday, April 17.

It’s his tribute to the club which he has devoted much of his life to following for the past 35 years as the current team stands on the brink of Wembley glory. Friend Tim Andrews, managing director of signs and graphics experts Hollywood Monster, agreed to wrap Gareth’s VW Touareg 4×4 after seeing his own club – Birmingham City – celebrate victory in the Carling Cup final.

Gareth’s love affair with The Potters includes:

  • He’s supported the club for 35 years.
  • He’s missed only five home games in that time – one of which was his wedding.
  • Then Stoke manager Lou Macari attended his wedding
- even though it was a match day.
  • Gareth grew up with Stoke legend Terry Conroy as next door neighbour for 18 years.
  • He lives on Wychwood Park with neighbours including Tony Pulis, Ricardo Fuller, Robert Huth and Tom Soares.
  • His boat in Wales is called “Delilah”, after the fans’ favourite song.
  • Gareth is a season ticket holder and sits next to the directors box.
  • He once sold a house to Dave Kevan, the then assistant manager to Steve Cotterill.
  • He was born in 1972 but at only 2 months old couldn’t attend Stoke’s FA Cup final victory.
  • If he is on holiday and Stoke have a match he comes back to attend the game.

Gareth, the 39-year-old managing director of Stone-based cosmetics wholesale company Beauty Distribution, said: “Well, if you’re going to Wembley why not do it in style? After 35 years of fairly mediocre football Stoke are now competing at the very highest level and doing well and this is my tribute to them for our big day. Let’s just hope the graphics have to stay in place until the final.”

Tim, managing director of Birmingham-based Hollywood Monster, said: “Having tasted Wembley glory with Birmingham in the Carling Cup, I was more than happy to be able to help Gareth celebrate Stoke’s FA Cup appearance in style.

“He’s always been completely devoted to the club through all its ups and downs so it is fantastic that they are now doing well in the Premier League and have a great chance to reach the FA Cup final. We’ve come up with a stunning design which will turn more than a few heads as he’s driving around Stoke and on the way down to Wembley.”

The company has invested heavily in state-of-the-art printing technology enabling it to produce enormous banners and advertising hoardings at high-profile sites including sports stadiums, festivals, rock and pop concerts, shopping centres and property developments.
