This weekend (Sunday 6 July) sees the first-ever ShardFest, a community-organised festival that was launched earlier this year in the wake of the Shard End Carnival. Planned by the local community, the event has received backing from Tyseley-based signage company Hollywood Monster, which has signed up as headline sponsor for the event.

Showing true community spirit, Hollywood Monster has provided the Shardfest organising committee with funds to make the event happen. The money is going towards a full programme of activities that aims to help ignite pride in local residents, celebrate the area’s history and motivate young people.

“When I heard about Shardfest I was really keen to help. Whilst Hollywood Monster operates on a national and international scale, it’s important for us to support the local community and Shardfest is a brilliant example of people getting up and making things happen,” said Tim Andrews, Managing Director at Hollywood Monster.

“The team of residents behind the event have worked tirelessly to pull the event out of the bag in just four months and I’m proud that Hollywood Monster could be part of this. It’s all about re-engaging the community and make them proud of where they live, whilst also celebrating the area’s unique history and educating its youth. I wish them all the best with the event and I hope that we remain supporters in many years to come,” he continued.

Taking place from 12pm on Sunday, Shard End will host three stages with over 25 live music acts, dance troops, Martial Arts performers and a local school choir. There will also be a music history exhibition celebrating the likes of Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne and Duran Duran’s Roger Taylor, who hail from the area. There will also be a jobs fair to help young people start their careers, and a Graffiti Wall for the artistic residents in attendance. With an expected audience of around 2,000, Shardfest will offer a host of activities, including a fun fair, inflatable village, charity football match, parks active display, face painting, mascots, food court, and Only Fools and Horses style three-wheeler car.

Paul Smith, who works at Lichfield-based Torrent Trackside, is behind the event:

“When I heard that the Shard End Carnival wouldn’t be taking place this year, I took to Facebook to see what local residents were saying. The general feeling was one of disappointment and helplessness, so I teamed up with some fellow residents who were eager to do something about it.

“Shardfest was set up at the end of February with the objective of bringing back community spirit and pride. We also committed to re-investing any money made into the area to help groups, schools and small businesses.

“Our ambitions have been pretty big from the beginning; at first we weren’t sure what to plan but we knew we wanted it to be something that Shard End residents would be proud of. Without the help of Hollywood Monster there’s no way this would be happening! We’ve essentially planned this in what should have been a 12-month period, but in four months. It’s not a cheap thing to put on so Hollywood Monster’s sponsorship has given us the boost that we need, as well as the fantastic signage that they’ve provided too! I want to entertain residents whilst highlighting what’s out there for them. It’s going to be a great day, for sure, and I hope it’s a long-lasting legacy for Shard End.”
